Joseph Feliciano of Keaau faces a preliminary hearing 2 p.m. Thursday in Hilo District Court. Feliciano, who is not the Big Island police officer of the same name, faces numerous charges stemming from a domestic tiff Dec. 18 in which his 48-year-old live-in girlfriend, Barbara Mateo, had two of her teeth knocked out.
Officers attempted to arrest Feliciano the following day at his Aulii Street home in Orchidland Estates subdivision. Police said Feliciano brandished two machetes and threw one of them at Puna Patrol Officer Brian Markham, narrowly missing his head.
Feliciano remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
